I must have been assuming
that lighting is noiseless,
and seawater
chooses not to make waves.
I must have been assuming
that I am not a perpetrator
because I do not have to think about
danger.
By not recognizing human beings
we can’t see ourselves or others.
By not thinking
we are desperate foreigners.
By acting as adversaries
we close our eyes to humanity
and fail to understand our purpose.
We are a we,
we are other people,
and we are the greatest mystery.
Invisible.
They don’t understand
that we are acting
when we play our roles.
By doing nothing
we take away voices
and allow the perpetuation.
See us.
We have a right to be understood.
By working together
we speak in our own tongue
and change the cycle.
I must have been assuming
that we are transformed–
that we are representatives.
But we are individualistic.
Shared power
spells universal good
because we can see the chaos outside of our window
and decide to stand up.
I must have been assuming
that you can’t see me
that our identities govern us.
But if you were in my place
then humanity is not rare.
When we begin learning together,
a light comes on
and we can become
visible
together.
